Beyond the static unit
What changes when a neuron is treated as a dynamical process with internal state, rather than only a static input–output function? We are exploring what kinds of representation that shift might make possible.

Criticality is one lens on the balance between persistence and responsiveness in interacting systems. We are interested in the conditions under which such regimes emerge, and what they might mean for computation.
How do nonlinear local processes shape representation, learning, and behavior across a network? The relationship between a unit’s dynamics and a system’s computation remains an open question.

We are exploring units whose internal state evolves and interacts with incoming signals. The aim is to ask what additional forms of representation such dynamics make possible; their usefulness has not yet been established.
Criticality is one motivating hypothesis among several. We are interested in how changes in coupling and nonlinear response alter persistence, sensitivity, and collective behavior, without assuming that any one regime is optimal.
Richer operational units raise questions about credit assignment, stability, and what it means for a representation to change. These are directions for investigation, not claims of a completed method or result.
Dynamics / a question, not a conclusion
A neuron is often described as an aggregation followed by a nonlinearity. We ask what becomes possible when a unit has evolving internal state. Criticality offers one lens on the regimes that might emerge as units interact. Whether these dynamics support useful representation or learning remains open.
